Monsanto Statement Regarding Contempt Of Court Injunction Notices

Monsanto PLC issued the following statement from London, Friday 16 July 1999 in response to press enquiries, after contempt of Court Injunction notices were served in relation to events which took place on 16th June at the Royal Agricultural Show of England's "Cereals 99" trade show for arable farmers held at Wendy, near Royston, Hertfordshire.

Tony Combes, Director of Corporate Affairs for Monsanto said:

"Because the High Court must ensure that its Injunctions are obeyed, Monsanto is legally obliged to notify the Court of breaches of the existing Injunction and, with reluctance, it has done so. The Court's Injunction prohibits damage to Government-sanctioned scientific field trials which are being conducted specifically to provide answers to environmental questions. It is solely for the Court to decide whether anyone is in contempt, and how it will deal with such contempt."

The application is due to be heard at the Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand on Wednesday 28 July 1999.
