Peer Pressure

The claim that the recent House of Lords report on the regulation of genetic modification in agriculture was prompted by a desire ‘to get the Government off a nasty public relations hook’ (Mail) is untrue.

The Lords’ European Communities select committee is composed of peers of all parties and of none. We aren't an arm of Government: we exist to scrutinise Government and European Commission legislative proposals.

We do this by using members expertise to examine evidence from anyone with sufficient interest in the subject to make submissions. The report has more than 400 pages of such evidence and this was the basis of our findings.

Genetically modified food is controversial and our report calling for more research and tighter regulation is an informed contribution to the debate. We are most certainly not calling for a free-for-all.
