Retraction By Rowett Research Institute
Commenting on this evening's announcement by the Rowett Research Institute, spokesman for Monsanto, Dan Verakis said: We are pleased that the Rowett Institute has recognised and publicly regretted the tremendous harm caused by the misleading publicity generated by such inaccurate information presented in the name of science. It is now clear that the alleged study did not involve genetically modified potatoes but used normal potatoes but used normal potatoes mixed with a well-known highly toxic chemical. The result was therefore hardly surprising. World in Action declined to provide us with details of this study which is why we declined to participate in the programme. Perhaps World in Action would also now like to review their programme with a view to issuing a retraction. Monsanto strongly supports informed debate, and the provision of better consumer information about genetic engineering. We are doing all we can to achieve these ends. The potential benefits for consumers, the environment and farmers of advances in genetic science have unfortunately in recent months been overshadowed by alarmist publicity stunts of one kind or another. We call upon all parties with interests in this science to ensure that this important debate is conducted responsibly and fairly. There is no credible evidence that suggests that genetically modified food is unsafe. For further information please contact Dan Verakis, Public Affairs
