Cabinet's Support For GM TechnologyAccording to the Daily Mail, a secret Cabinet report has turned Labour policy on genetically modified food on its head by claiming that the technology could win the war against hunger in the Third World. The report delivers a glowing account of how GM crops would help millions who live under the shadow of famine. It acknowledges concerns, but says they are outweighed by the benefits it could bring to the developing world. It argues that GM crops could deliver much better yields than conventional crops in areas plagued by food shortages. It also claims there are big environmental benefits in growing crops which have been developed to thrive without being sprayed with lots of pesticides and chemicals. Finally, it says there will be less waste because GM crops can be stored for longer without deteriorating.
