Britain Gives Go-ahead For GM Rapeseed Trials

According to Reuters, the British government has given official permission for 21 trials of genetically modified (GM) rapeseed to start in England in September. The government said all farmers next to the trial sites had been notified. "Separation distances" of 50 to 400 meters (yards) between their fields and the experimental locations "will ensure that any cross-pollination could only occur at a vanishingly small level," it said.

The environmental group Greenpeace accused Prime Minister Tony Blair's ruling Labour government of failing to apply for planning permission to use agricultural land for the GM rapeseed trials and threatened to take legal action. A government spokeswoman called the group's claim "rubbish" and said it was based on ignorance. The government, which approved the trials covering up to 250 hectares mainly in central England three weeks ago, said it had no plans to bow to Greenpeace's demands.
